I thought you might like to see it, too:

Another Night Before Christmas

Just last Christmas Eve I had a strange visitor. This is how it happened: I had just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door of the front room, and to my surprise, I saw Santa Claus himself stepping out from behind the Christmas tree. He placed his fingers over his lips so I wouldn't cry out.
"What are you doing here..." I started to ask, but the words choked up in my throat as I saw that he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. As I stood there in my robe bewildered, Santa said, "We've done it all wrong. You need to teach the children." My perplexed expression still showed in the near darkness. Fumbling in his sack, he drew forth a bright shining gold star.
"Teach them the old meaning of Christmas ~ the meanings that Christmas nowadays has forgotten. Teach the children that the star was a heavenly sign of promise long ages ago. God promised a Savior for the world and a sign of the fulfillment of that promise was the great Star of the East. The star now reminds us of God's love for mankind and of God fulfilling His promise. The countless shining stars at night now show the burning hope of all mankind." Santa gently laid the star upon the fireplace mantle and drew forth from the bag a glittering red Christmas ornament.
"Teach the children, red is the first color of Christmas. It was first used by the faithful people to remind them of the blood which was shed for all people by the Savior. Jesus Christ gave his life and shed his blood that every man might have God's gift to all, eternal life. Red is deep, intense, vivid. It is the greatest color of all. It is the symbol of the gift of God." As Santa was twisting and pulling another object out of his bag, I heard the kitchen clock begin to strike twelve. I wanted to say something, but he went right on.
"Teach the children", he said as the twisting and pulling suddenly dislodged a small Christmas tree from the depths of the toy bag. He placed it before the mantle and gently hung the red ornament on the Christmas tree. The deep green of the fir tree was perfect background for the ornament. Here was the second color of Christmas.
"The pure color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round," he said. "This depicts the everlasting hope of mankind, and the everlasting life we can only get through His Son. Green is the youthful, hopeful, abundant color of nature. All the needles point heavenward ~ symbolic of man's need to focus on heaven. The tree itself is a symbol of that other tree, the one that became a cross. The great, green tree has been one of man's best friends. It has sheltered him, warmed him, made beauty for him, formed his furniture." Santa's eyes were beginning to twinkle now as he stood there. Suddenly I heard a soft tinkling sound. As it grew louder, it seemed like the sound of long ago.
"Teach the children, that as the lost sheep are found by sounds of the bell, so should it ring for men to return to the fold; it means guidance and return to God; it further signifies that all are precious in the eyes of the Lord. He left the 99 and went in search of the one." As the soft sound of the bell faced into the night, Santa drew forth a candle. He placed it on the mantle and the soft glow from its tiny flame cast an eerie glow about the darkened room. Odd shapes in the shadow slowly danced and weaved upon the walls.
"Teach the children," whispered Santa, "that the candle shows man's thanks for the star of long ago. It signifies the Light that shines within all God's people. A light that should never be hidden. It's flame seems very weak, but it chases away the darkness, just as the stars do. It's small light is the mirror of starlight. At first candles were placed on the Christmas Tree ~ they were like many glowing stars shining against the dark green. Safety now has removed the candles from the tree and the colored lights have taken over in remembrance."
Santa turned the small Christmas tree lights on and picked up a gift from under the tree. He pointed to the large bow ribbon and said, "Teach the children. A bow is placed on a present to remind us of the spirit of the brotherhood of man. We should remember that the bow is tied as men should be tied ~ all of us together, with the bonds of good will and love toward each other. Goodwill forever is the message of the bow."
Now I wondered what else Santa had in his bag. Instead of reaching in his bag, he slung it over his shoulder and began to reach up on the Christmas tree. I thought he was hungry as he reached for a candy cane, purposely placed high on the tree. He unfastened it and reached out toward me with it.

"Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherds crook. The crook on the staff helps bring back the strayed sheep to the fold. The candy cane represents the helping hand we should show at Christmas time. The candy is the symbol that we are our brother's keeper. The red represents the Blood of Salvation, and the white the Purity that only comes from it's cleansing flow."
Santa then paused. He seemed to realize he should be on his way. Later would be his big day. As he looked about the room, a feeling of satisfaction and relief showed in his face. He reached into his bag and brought forth a large holly wreath. He placed it on the fireplace and said, "Please teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the eternal nature of God's love; it never ceases, stops or ends. It is one continuous round of affection. The wreath does double duty. It is made of many things and in many colors. It reminds us all of the things of Christmas. Please teach the children."

As I gazed at the wreath, he slipped away, his job done....pointing people back to the real meaning behind this celebration.
I pondered and wondered and thrilled with delight,
As I saw and viewed all those symbols that night.
I dozed as I sat in the soft candle light,
And my thoughts were of Jesus and all He made right.
To give and to help, to love and to serve,
Are the best things of life, all men can deserve.
Old Santa Claus that jolly fat little elf,
Is not the best symbol of Christmas itself.
Jesus gave us the gift of love and of life,
The ending of evil, the ceasing of strife.
Santa's message to me on the pre-Christmas night,
Has opened a treasure of deepest insight.
The one thing on earth we all ought to do,
Is the teaching of children the right and the true.

Author Unknown

CHRISTMAS QUIZ

Christmas Quiz

1. Egg nog or hot chocolate? l love hot chocolate! (Hot, Hot! Ooooh, we got it!! HOT CHOCOLATE!! - Love Polar Express, too!)

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Santa displays his gifts under the tree. Sometimes, he wraps a few, but for the most part, they're just under the tree to look at when we wake up.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? We have white outside, and colored on the tree.

4. Do you hang mistletoe? No, I haven't hung mistletoe in several years.

5. When do you put your decorations up? When everyone else is holiday shopping, the day after Thanksgiving! It's really the best time for me and my family!

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? My favorite holiday dish is green bean casserole. Heck, any casserole for that matter! Just pass the dish!!

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child: There was one Christmas that my Mom and Dad didn't have much money to really give us a big Christmas. Mom even felt really down about it, and my sister and I knew that, because she kept repeating what a small Christmas we would have. We both ended up with stocking stuffers (fruit, gum & candy), a large stuffed animal, and a box with a $100 bill in it. We ended up going to the mall and shopping for some clothes, or whatever we wanted. I had so much fun shopping with "that much money!" It was a lot for a teenage girl back then!! I just remember it was so memorable, and we were so happy, that it didn't matter we weren't overwhelmed with gifts -- it truly was the THOUGHT that counted that year!

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
My sister and I were joking around with Mom and Dad at the dinner table about Santa, and my dad blurted out, "There's no Easter Bunny, No tooth fairy, and NO SANTA!!" We all sat in silence the rest of the meal...! LOL!!

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
Yes, we open gifts at Memaw and Pepaw's house. Then Christmas morning, we open gifts at home (of course), then head over to Nana and Papaw's for more gift-openin'!

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
Colored Lights of all kinds, and I have boxes of ornaments dating back from my childhood that I use each year. Our tree looks similar from year to year!

11. Snow! Love it or dread it? Oh, love the first one! And even the second (especially if the kids are out of school!!) But that third one. . . weeelllllll. . .

12. Can you ice skate? Good heavens, no! There are just some things fat girls are NOT meant to do. . . !

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? I remember getting a tape recorder with blank tapes for Christmas! Oh, man, that was something!! My sister and I would spend HOURS playing with that thing!!! And, the CHOCOLATE SANTA... a phrase that was made famous by the tape recorder!!

14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you? The most important thing about the holidays, for me, is that I stop husslin' and busslin' long enough to reflect upon the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? Cherry Berry on a Cloud

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? I get up extra early on Christmas Eve, and fix a huge breakfast for my family. It's just the four of us, and I get out my grandma's china, my great-grandma's bowls, my mom's dishes, and it feels like I'm eating with my "new family" and my "childhood family" together. It's very special!! There's also another tradition of going to see my hubby's family Christmas Eve, then spending Christmas Day with my family. I love our traditions!!

17. What tops your tree? A sparkly bright star, but I think it's seen better days...

18. Which do you prefer, giving presents or receiving them? Oh, this is a tough one! I LOVE getting presents, but the older I get, the more I realize GIVING gifts is much more fun!

19. What is your favorite Christmas song? Rockin' around the Christmas Tree" by Brenda Lee

20. Candy canes? I love 'em to decorate with, but my daughter keeps eating them...

21. Favorite Christmas movie? The Polar Express

22. What do you leave for Santa? Milk and cookies - and he only leaves crumbs!

Now, it's your turn! Take this quiz yourself and bring out your GREAT holiday memories!!

When you run out of GIFT ideas...

Read this.

And remember that when you give gifts, give from the heart. While Labor Day has barely passed, it really isn't too early to begin preparing for the holiday season.

I am beginning to think about the holidays even though I am still wilting from the heat when I go outside, but I am not alone. People all over the country and the world are beginning to think about the Christmas season this week.

Why?

This is the first week of the Holiday Grand Plan. Have you heard of it?

The Holiday Grand Plan is this awesome fully downloadable program. The Holiday Grand Plan gives you small, bite size chores to perform each week between now and New Year’s. It helps you get your house in order and by order I mean clean, really clean. It helps you plan your Christmas goodies, gift purchases, and meals. It helps you cook less in December so you can enjoy the season that much more. It helps you be less frazzled and harried leading up to the holidays so you can truly enjoy the spirit of the season.

The plan has Yahoo! groups for discussion if you want to share your Christmas planning with others on the net. The yahoo group has an annual Christmas Card Swap so you can give and get cards with other HGP participants from around the world.

You can download the checklists, planner pages, calendars and more from the official site. Best of all, there is no cost to participate in the program.

Probably the most difficult part of the plan is putting it in action and actually doing the work. Do you really want to be thinking about Christmas cards right now in September? Probably not. But, do you really want to be stressed over getting the cards out along with a shopping list a mile long the last couple of weeks of December? Definitely not!! Taking baby steps now makes Christmas so much more enjoyable and gives you so much more time to feel the spirit of Christ in your heart during the Christmas season.

The Holiday Grand Plan by Organized Christmas works for me!

The REAL meaning of Christmas

There's nothing like the Charlie Brown cartoon over the holidays to remind you of your childhood, and this is one of the best. Wonder if this comes in my size!?" (I always find something for ME around the holidays. Heck, I deserve it! All that shopping makes me want to go home with a little somethin'-somethin'!!) Anyways, this spreadsheet, although quite simplistic in nature, has through the years been my tried-and-true method of making my gift list.

This gift list is not in a notebook, so traditionally I tri-fold it and keep it in my purse. That way, no matter where I am, there it is. Literally. I can add gift ideas to it in pencil (This is the ONLY TIME OF THE YEAR I use a pencil!), then I can change my mind later if I've determined I was temporarily insane when I initially wrote it. When the gift is bought, I simply put a line through the gift, and when wrapped, ye ol' trusty highlighter completes the gift. I know by looking at this list what gift ideas I have, what has been bought, and what has been wrapped. When I am finished buying for that particular person, I simply put an "X" in the "X" column, signifying to me that I'm ready to see that person at Christmas.

I mean, I don't want to be caught red-handed around Christmas without a gift for someone! I have been known to do that, and there's nothing like that feeling of being a true "heel" for either forgetting to bring a gift, or forgetting the person entirely.

It's not pretty. Doesn't feel good at all.

So, do yourself a favor, and if you don't have a "plan of attack" when it comes to gift lists, try this one out. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how simple this is.

Go ahead. Download the form. You'll thank me for this later!

Finding your Christmas STYLE

I happen to LOVE to decorate for Christmas. Bet you couldn't tell. But what I hate about decorating is the cleanup afterwards. I hate it so much, that in recent years, I will forgo getting out certain decorations, knowing how cumbersome it is to repack it afterwards. So, I am learning to find my STYLE for Christmas, so I can downsize my decorations, and put up the decorations that make the statement I want them to make.

That statement being "Hey, I thought through every detail this Christmas."

Nothing like being able to say THAT!

So, without further ado, I give you The Twelve Styles of Christmas. Better Homes and Gardens put these styles together, and as much as I've enjoyed perusing through all the pictures, I found it quite annoying to keep saying NO to their subscription popups.

Just look through all of them, and keep closing the subscription notices. It will be well worth it, and I won't make you go there anymore, I promise.

Well, at least until next time.

Go. . . find your STYLE!!

Body Splash sale at Bath & Body Works

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_aFluBHNMP7Q/SC9uEtysndI/AAAAAAAAAds/5lrQ8uGl7Tg/s400/body-splash.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5201497121926979026" />
Okay, so I know you're thinking, "Geesh, Amy! Why do I even need to THINK about shopping sales right now!?"

Well, silly, because you like to SAVE MONEY. If you have thousands of dollars laying around to spend around the holidays, and plenty of time to Christmas shop, then stop reading. This post is NOT for you.

But, if you're like me, and the thought of saving TONS of moola, yet getting quality products at a fraction of a cost sounds appealing, then check out Bath and Body Works. They are having a sale this weekend on their body splashes. $5 bottles sound like teacher gifts to me, and I LOVE their fragrances! Who doesn't love getting that yummy stuff for Christmas!?

And, I've noticed a little trend around the holidays that I DON'T LIKE. It's that little thing called a "holiday sale." I'm just not convinced I'm getting the best price. I think they raise the retail price, then slash it to call it a "holiday sale," and you walk away feeling pretty good, yet wondering if you got the best deal. You want to know if you're getting the best deal? BUY NOW. Buy things you can put in a box in your closet (don't forget to label them as to whom they belong to) and rest assured, you're getting a good deal and you'll be ready for Christmas, all at the same time!

With internet shopping sooooo popular these days, why not shop for a few things at a time? Wait for those sales, and buy early! You'll save time, money and sanity.

It's the latter I'm hoping I'll have this year for Christmas.

Man, some presents you just can't wrap. SANITY is one of them!

Recipe - Cherry Berry On a Cloud

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_aFluBHNMP7Q/SC24PtysnbI/AAAAAAAAAdc/VuOTRdxPLb8/s400/cherry+berry+cloud.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5201015724812574130" />
This is the one dessert that I make for Christmas that make others marvel at my cooking ability.

I don't dare tell them how easy that is. I mean, what good would that do? Let them think I slaved over the oven for such a delectable treat. I'm the kind of cook that flicks flour in my face, then serves rice crispies. Remember that commercial???

Anyways, without further ado, here's the recipe:

INGREDIENTS

* 6 egg whites
* 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1 3/4 cups sugar
* FILLING:
* 2 (3 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
* 1 cup sugar
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 2 cups heavy whipping cream, whipped
* 2 cups miniature marshmallows
* TOPPING:
* 1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
* 2 cups sliced fresh strawberries
* 1 teaspoon lemon juice

DIRECTIONS

1. In a mixing bowl, beat egg whites, cream of tartar and salt until foamy. Gradually add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating on high until stiff peaks form (do not underbeat). Spread evenly in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking pan. Bake at 275 degrees F for 1 hour; turn off oven (do not open door). Let cool in oven overnight or at least 12 hours.
2. Beat cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until smooth; gently fold in whipped cream and marshmallows. Spread over meringue. Chill for 4 hours. Cut into 16 pieces. Combine topping ingredients; spoon 1/4 cup over each serving.

Holiday "To-Do" Lists - Don't we LOVE them???

Ahhh. . . listmaking. I absolutely LOVE making lists! I have to-do lists on the back of envelopes in the car, next to the telephone, and by my bed (you know, when that 'Oh! I can't forget THAT in the morning!' moment comes to me at around 2am). I love my lists. They give me permission to let my brain "vegetate" from trying to remember all the stuff floating around in my head.

But, seriously? They are also ESSENTIAL to get through Christmas.

Do you make lists? What do they look like? Do you put them in a neat and organized notebook, or do you put them on little post-it notes all over your house/office? I tend to use a little of both. I happen to like variety when it comes to putting my thoughts on paper.

It's how I roll.

I will share with you, in a later post, what I do for the holidays. I use a Christmas Binder. I don't have a picture with me today, but I'll try to have that up in the next couple of days. It keeps everything Christmas right at my fingertips. I can throw it in the car, take it with me to work, whatever I need to keep all my thoughts in one spot.

Holiday "To-Do" lists - can't live without 'em!

Holiday Survival Plan - - THE HOUSE

Okay. So this beautiful woman is NOT me. This isn't even my kitchen. But seeing this cute chick in her cute little pink gloves, cleaning out her cute little dishwasher, with that cute, calm, smiling persona reminds me of TWO things:

First of all, this woman has no more cleaned that kitchen she's in than I have. She's not even broken a sweat, for Gosh sake. I dunno about you, but I do NOT look like this woman when my house is clean...

Secondly, it reminds me of the first step I must do every year before I hit the stores...

CLEAN THE HOUSE.

Ugh. I know, I know. I don't want to clean house, either. I think I'd rather go see a gynecologist than to spend hours scrubbing my house. But let's face it. There's no reason to go shopping and bring all your cute little Christmas treasures into a dirty house. Get real! It's time to buck up and start making your house smell good!!

Let me give you a few tips on cleaning your house for Christmas:

1) Make a list of ALL the rooms in your house (Living Room, Kitchen, Bedroom 1, Bathroom 2, etc.) and also include "ENTRYWAY" as a room. We'll get to this later. This list should be on just plain notebook paper, or if you're feelin' frisky, you should walk around with your nifty Christmas binder. Don't worry about this - we'll discuss the coveted CHRISTMAS BINDER later.

2) Once you have all the rooms listed, go through each room and write down chores needed to be done in each room to get them all spiffy for the holidays (decluttter, dust, vacuum, windex, etc.) If you need help with making your lists for each room, click here for some really great ideas.

3) Before you decide to be SUPERWOMAN, and tackle all these rooms at once, let's get real. You and I both know it will not happen overnight. As much as I would LOVE to have that house that practically cleans itself, the fact is cleaning my house is gonna take a while. So, sit back and grab your calendar. Look and see what nights and weekends you can devote to your calendar, and start there. When you involve your calendar, you won't get discouraged when only one or two rooms get done. You'll feel like an accomplished woman/wife/mother. Now...doesn't that feel better???

4) Put the plan into ACTION!! It's time to tackle the rooms that are least used first (dining room, laundry room, entryway), then work up to the "everyday" rooms. Why include your entryway? Well, personally I like my front door and entryway to look welcoming to my guests at Christmas, so I usually spend some time out there sweeping, wiping down the entryway, windexing the doors - you get the idea. Just fluff and make it look special, for your family AND your friends.

Sounds simple? It really is. Finding the time to get this done will be the difficult part. But a little at a time will get it done, instead of PANICKING the night before company comes over. Trust me, it's gonna be a stress-free holiday this year!!

Welcome! Why, you ask? Why do you think about that holiday, when it's 70 degrees , Spring has JUST sprung, and you've just put away your heavy winter coats for the last time this season???

Well, for me, the answer is SIMPLE. In a few months time, I will be overloaded with housework, gift lists, bargain shopping, scheduling calendars for hosting parties, budgeting, and just overall a need to panic when it comes to Christmas.

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. A time to remember our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ's birth, and to celebrate with friends and family the gift God has given us. He is truly the reason for the season!

But EVERY YEAR I get overwhelmed with the buzz of all things Christmas, I tend to lose focus on the IMPORTANT things - - sitting down with my family, enjoying gifts (no, really! Enjoying their eyes and being in the moment without thinking to myself "Geesh, Aims - you've only had 2 hours sleep!"), and just overall breathing and relaxing during the most exciting of holidays.

So, how do we do that, you ask? Well, I've scoured the internet, looking for helpful hints and tricks, and I have a few that I think will help - - and I would like to share them with you.

So, sit back, and grab a cup of hot chocolate (don't forget the candy cane!) and let's enjoy some helpful holiday tricks to make this year's Christmas the most AMAZING it can be, one step at a time!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://getreadyforchristmas.blogspot.com/2008/05/welcome-come-on-in.html' title='Welcome!
